Islands of Insight: A Brilliant Puzzle Utopia

Islands of Insight is an expansive, open-world puzzle adventure featuring thousands of enigmas and satisfying perspective challenges.
Introduction
Have you ever wondered what The Witness would look like as an expansive, open-world cooperative experience? Islands of Insight set out to answer exactly that. Packed with thousands of enigmas spread across a gorgeous landscape, this title offers an incredibly dense and rewarding experience for puzzle enthusiasts-even if its ambitious multiplayer dream was ultimately cut short.
A World Built on Brainteasers
Islands of Insight is an open-world puzzle game boasting an overwhelming amount of content. From the moment you step foot in the world, practically everywhere you look features a new challenge to solve.
Mechanic Introduction
The game features 24 distinct puzzle types, encompassing thousands of individual missions across the map. The developers brilliantly introduce these mechanics through dedicated "tutorial islands," allowing you to master the logic of a specific puzzle type before encountering harder variations in the wild. Some mechanics are even woven naturally into the beginning of your adventure, teaching you without holding your hand.
Puzzle Variety
The variety is stellar. You will find logic puzzles that demand heavy brainpower, like "Area Sudoku" and color scheme challenges, alongside hidden map puzzles that only unlock after you reach certain completion milestones.
Perspective Puzzles
However, the standout challenges are the perspective puzzles. Taking a clear page from The Witness, Islands of Insight features environmental puzzles where you must align fragmented images by finding the perfect vantage point. Another highlight involves a series of scattered rings; you have to physically maneuver your character into the exact spot where a single line of sight passes through the center of every ring at once. It’s immensely satisfying.
The Shift to Single-Player
Originally designed as an MMO, the game was built around the fantastic concept of exploring an open world and solving puzzles alongside friends and strangers. Unfortunately, keeping servers live for a buy-to-play MMO is a monumental task.
Active Support and Server Shutdown
Despite being published by Behaviour Interactive (the powerhouse behind Dead by Daylight), the active player base couldn't sustain the server costs. A few months after I picked up the game during a promotional giveaway in June 2024, it was announced that the servers were shutting down.
The Offline Transition
While players were given the option to transfer their online progress to an offline save file, the transition was abrupt (and a bit heartbreaking if, like me, you forgot to transfer your save and had to start over!). However, the fact that I was willing to replay all those lost hours speaks volumes about the game's quality.
Current Status and Monetization
Today, Islands of Insight is an offline-only, single-player experience. While it is tough to look back at the lost potential of its shared world, the sheer volume of high-quality puzzles remains completely intact. Furthermore, the game's fair monetization-pay once to play, with plenty of cosmetics easily unlocked for free through gameplay-is highly commendable in today's gaming landscape.
Final Thoughts
It is surprising that the publisher didn't support the MMO aspect longer, given the unique niche it filled. But even as a strictly solo adventure, Islands of Insight is a phenomenal achievement in puzzle design. If you love brainteasers, enigmas, and exploring beautiful open worlds, this is an absolute must-play.
